I love sweet and salty treats and these cookies are good. I was inspired to test them out after recently trying one at Beaucoup Bakery, one of my favorite local bakeries. It turns out it’s not that hard to make them at home. Try them out and see for yourself (or, if you’re not in the mood to bake your own, now you know where you can buy them)!
New York Trip!
What an amazing city! I love New York. D and I recently spent a week there on vacation. We decided to go before Baby Bean arrives in June and as it turned out, February worked really well with our schedules. Our time there overlapped with New York Fashion Week, the NBA All-Star Weekend, and… freezing cold temperatures (average of about -10 C!). This West Coast girl is not used to that kind of cold. At least it was clear and crisp with blue skies, so it was actually quite pretty and it wasn’t so bad as long as we layered up before venturing out. So much for all my careful outfit planning and packing though – my little leather jacket and stiletto booties didn’t see the light of day, and instead I mostly just wore my warmest clothes and a hat the entire time. Oh well, I’m not complaining one bit. It was a wonderful trip and I’m so glad we were able to go!
As for what to do in NYC, there are whole websites devoted to this topic and it’s really hard to cover off in a little blog post. However, I’ve tried my best to sum up what we got up to while there and to compile a list of recommendations in case you find yourself in the Big Apple anytime soon.
Weekend Recap: January 30th – February 1st
Last weekend already feels like a blur. It marked the end of January (my least favorite month) and ushered in February – a month that, in my mind, marks the end of the worst of winter. So, what did I get up to? Nothing too adventurous… a little hike, a movie night, a pedicure, and the Super Bowl (re: halftime show). It was a nice little low-key local weekend and I was happy to get a chance to catch up on some sleep after having a cold for most of January. Here’s a recap below of where I went, what I did, and who I saw…
Gift Ideas: Valentine’s Day
Like it or not (I know there are some strong opinions on this holiday), Valentine’s Day is just one week away. If you’re in a relationship, that means it’s time to turn your mind to it if you haven’t already. I actually like this holiday – there’s something nice about taking the time to celebrate love and to have a romantic night. My ideal Valentine’s Day is pretty basic: having some wine at home, exchanging cards and a small gift (like chocolates, macrons, or other sweets), then heading out for dinner and champagne. This year, D and I will be in NYC – our dinner reservations are booked, and it will be so fun to be in a different city and on vacation. That’s a perfect Valentine’s Day if you ask me and I can’t wait. If you don’t quite have a weekend away in New York to look forward to, I’ve included a few ideas below that might inspire you and help you figure out what to do for that special someone:
Recipes: Roasted Cauliflower, Leek, and Carrot Soup
On a cold and rainy day like today, soup was on the menu. Homemade soup tastes so much better, but I always feel like making soup is a daunting process. In reality, it’s pretty easy and well worth it. Tonight I made a roasted cauliflower, leek, and carrot soup – I found the recipe on Instagram (it’s courtesy of the Flourishing Foodie blog) and decided to try it out. It was yummy and easy to make, and I’ll make it again. The roasted cauliflower is the best part, so make sure you have plenty of it. Recipe is below…
Whoa Baby!
Weekend Recap: January 16-18, 2015
I don’t know about you, but January is typically my least favorite month. The weather sucks, summer feels far away, and my credit card bill is always a buzzkill. However, things are looking up. My husband D and I booked our trip next month to New York (!) and I’ve been trying to get out and socialize as much as a I can. I’ve been fighting a brutal cold for a few weeks now, but while I’m not a doctor, I think socializing and laughter are the best medicines, am I right? Below is a recap of my weekend (well, I’m cheating actually, as I decided to start with Wednesday instead of Friday because that sort of felt like the start to my weekend)…
Recipes: Classic Hummus
Did you know the proper way to say hummus is “who-mus”? Who knew? In 2013, D and I went to the Middle East and learned that not only does hummus taste a thousand times better over there, but that we had been saying it wrong the whole time. Anyway, this post is actually about making hummus at home, and not about how to say it. It’s quick and easy to make and it’s way tastier than the store bought stuff… not to mention free of preservatives. And it’s healthy. What’s not to like? While it might not be quite as good as what we experienced on vacation, it’s still a pretty good go-to recipe. Recipe below…
Weekend Recap: January 9-11, 2015
I always know it’s going to be a good weekend when Seattle is involved. I love that city and promise to do a more comprehensive Seattle post soon. It has great food, good shopping, and it has a casual coolness to it… not to mention they’ve got that happy hour thing down. I spent my weekend split between there and Vancouver and it was a good one. My recap of the weekend is below…
Recipes: Soba Noodle Veggie Bowl with Thai Peanut Sauce
After all the shortbread and the other holiday treats, it’s time to lay off the baking and return to healthier meals. I really like this quick and yummy soba noodle bowl. It’s vegan and gluten free… But if you want, you can add chicken, salmon, or prawns. It’s great for dinner and leftovers are good cold the next day. As my husband likes to say, it’s “so-bad it’s good”. The recipe is based on a recipe from the Oh She Glows recipe book.
